ABOUT
PAIX (Gee Katungi) is a musician, interdisciplinary artist and director based in Scotland.
PAIX’s works span sound, visual media, and live performance — often blurring boundaries between disciplines, and rooted in collaboration. As PAIX (meaning peace), her work centres care and liberatory praxis, drawing from Black feminist thought, somatic and spiritual inquiry, oral storytelling, and speculative fiction. Across all mediums, PAIX’s work seeks to remember, play, (re) connect and re-imagine - exploring new paradigms, grounded in joy, connection, emotional honesty.
PAIX has released over 20 tracks to date, with several receiving recognition as BBC Radio 6 and BBC Introducing Records of the Week and designed sound for multiple film works, including the award-winning Ghost Island by Lisandro Suriel and Svikiro by Sekai Machache. As a featured artist and co-writer on With Love, From Glasgow by Rebecca Vasmant, PAIX contributed to a project that charted in the Top 10 of both the UK and International Jazz charts. Their collaboration continued on Who We Are Becoming, longlisted for the 2025 Scottish Album of the Year Award.
Currently, PAIX is writing and recording a debut solo album, supported by Creative Scotland and Help Musicians, featuring collaborators from across Scotland, the UK and the world. Alongside this, they are writing and directing a new short film commissioned by the National Theatre of Scotland.
PAIX is deeply collaborative in process and practice. Regularly working with artists across disciplines, creating immersive and relational works that span performance, sound, digital media and film. Her collaborations are rooted in local and international networks, with a focus on slow, intentional and relational processes and experimentation and collective authorship.
In addition to leading her own creative projects, PAIX is regularly commissioned to develop original songs, scores, sound design, and visual work for both screen and stage.
PAIX is also a member of several collectives including:
Yon Afro Collective – an interdisciplinary collective of Black artists in Scotland
HenHoose – an all-women and non-binary music production and song-writing collective
Black Birthers, Scotland – which PAIX founded, focused on building a dedicated community space, rooted in solidarity, collective care and joy for, isolated Black mamas, birthers and their children.
Alongside a flourishing artistic practice, PAIX is a long-standing campaigner and organiser.
She is currently Executive Director at Kinfolk Network, a UK-wide organisation that brings Black organisers and campaigners together to strategise, connect and heal. With a background in grassroots movement-building, Gillian has held positions as an elected community councillor, trustee, youth worker and remains actively involved in community organising.
She is committed to co-creating sustainable, liberatory ecosystems for a just and livable future. As a mentor (through MCR Pathways and informal networks), and a cultural worker, her approach is shaped by values of care, access, accountability, transformative justice, radical imagination and anti-oppression.

RESIDENCIES
Sage Gateshead, Summer Studios, Residency, Newcastle, 2023
Working on arranging and rehearsing the tracks for my forthcoming album at the Summer Studios residency, 2023. Sage Gateshead residencies are for artists; musicians, bands, producers, rappers and singers. The programme gives time and support to artists to create new work, develop their sound, take part in a photoshoot, film a live session, receive mentoring from industry professionals via masterclasses and 1:1s.
Take Me Somewhere and La Serre Festival, Artist in residence, Glasgow & Montreal, Feb 2023
A twinned international residency between Take Me Somewhere in Glasgow and La Serre in Montreal. Alongside being provided the physical space and resources to develop my live performance practice and project. Each artist was allocated an artist ‘Host’ from their twinned city, who they met online to act as a creative sounding board, and introduce the artist to their local artistic community.
I worked on developing my live project - ‘We Thrive’ - a celebration of black scottish femme lives, supported by Stella Quines Theatre Co.
Body Remedy at Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Artist in Residence, Glasgow, July 2022
An independently led residency with no expectation of presentation and outcome. It is a space to rest, research, reflect and respond to the artist's own inquiry. I developed the film for my single, Hope Is A Weapon, ran rehearsals for my dancers and invited Movement Director, Mele Broomes to support them with choreography and movement for the visual ahead of filming. The tune was released in April 2022.
Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in partnership with Buzzcut Festival — Artist in Residence, Glasgow, June 2021
With the residency I created a live performance around identity and belonging, rejection, and reclamation through diasporic experience. The performance, ‘Space: Liminal Being’ was a sensory experience bringing together and exploring live soundscape, movement, visual art, and theater, presented in 2021.
